Great Teas and Clean Seas
We believe that there's a special moment when you enjoy a good cup of tea where your mind can unwind and you can reflect on good stuff for a while. A recent documentary from the BBC however moved us to reflect and feel rather sad about the way some businesses choose to use harmful processes in their products.
The production of teabags requires thousands of litres of water and the majority of those made in the UK are made of a plastic called polypropylene. Yup, that’s right, some manufacturers use plastic in those little bags full of tea. It can account for up to 25% of the bag meaning it's impossible to fully compost. With the Brits alone drinking an estimated 165 million cups of tea a day a terrifying 876,000 tonnes of plastic could be polluting the environment each year. Those happy moments of space and calm when enjoying a cuppa just took a sad turn.
We at ZigZag Tea think it is essential that we are as ethical and sustainable as we can be from sourcing ingredients through to production of the end product.
Our pyramid teabags are 100% biodegradable.
They are made of a bi-product of corn starch, which are cut and sealed using an ultrasonic wave – sounds fancy right? This method is also great for flavour - as it requires no plastic or heat sealing.
No plastic or heat = less energy = eco-friendly teabag = a happy environment. So you can feel good and positive when taking time out for a delicious cup of the good stuff.
